108888.0075.0000.00documentsHarold B. Kennerly, Jr. Collection:The bulk ofRange, Cir 01/01/1930 - 12/31/1979Harold B. Kennerly, Jr. Collection:The bulk of the Kennerly collection is comprised of correspondence concerning efforts to fight a proposed tariff on imported tuna in the early 1950s. Chiefly, they concern the H. B. Kennerly & Son packing company and House of Representatives Bill 5693, which sought to put a 3 cent per pound tax on imported tuna. Kennerly, as head of the Tuna Canners Association, corresponded heavily with members of Congress in 1951 and 1952 against the bill. Following this he opposed restrictions on imported groundfish fillets, and worked for scientific study of the tuna fish. Additional materials in the collection include newspaper and magazine articles about Bill 5693 and H. B. Kennerly & Son, and documents from both H. B. Kennerly & Son and its predecessor, Roaring Point Oyster Company. The collection also includes two miscellaneous items from local Nanticoke history: an article about a steamboat line, and a daybook from a construction company. Biographical BackgroundMr. Harold B. Kennerly, Jr. (born 1914/1915) was an important figure in Maryland's Eastern Shore seafood industry from the 1930s to the 1970s. He was the third generation of Kennerlys to operate oyster houses on the Chesapeake. His father, Harold, Sr., operated the Roaring Point Oyster Company, a seasonal oyster shucking business out of Nanticoke, Maryland. When the son joined the firm circa 1938 the name changed to Harold B. Kennerly & Son. During World War II they canned tomatoes in the summer and fish products starting in the fall that including herring, whitefish, and oysters. In 1945 they became the first tuna canners on the Eastern Shore, first canning albacore tuna caught in the Atlantic, then importing Pacific tuna from Peru, Japan, and elsewhere as production (and demand) increased. By the early 1950s, the company canned tuna, herring, vegetables, blackberries, strawberries, and froze clam chowder, sea clams, clam strips, oysters, oyster stews, and fish sticks. Around 1951 Harold, Jr. joined several other canners in founding the Tuna Canners Association (members in MA, MD, and ME) to fight passage of House of Representatives Bill 5693, legislation that sought to levy a three-cent tax on every pound of "imported" tuna fish. The tariff would have benefited Southern California packing houses that canned tuna caught by American vessels fishing in waters off the coasts of Central and South America. East Coast packers purchased tuna from the same region, though they earned the "import" designation by using local fishermen and transporting the catch to the United States in foreign-owned vessels. Through an intense lobbying effort between the Tuna Canners Association and various Senators, the bill was defeated when finally put to a vote in the U. S. Senate on June 24, 1952. Even after this victory, the correspondence indicates additional hearings, potential restrictions, and tariff negotiations continuing into the mid 1950s, beyond the dates of this collection. When not lobbying for the canning industry, Harold Kennerly, Jr. traveled the United States marketing oysters. The company shipped across the continental United States and Canada, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Montreal. They canned under many different brands, including Maryland House and Seacrest, and canned for other companies including Campbell's Soup, A & P, Kroeger, and American Stores. Besides their own seed oyster beds in the Nanticoke River, they at various times bought oysters from Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, Oregon, and Washington State. They also had companies in Virginia and Delaware shucking for them. In 1956 H. B. Kennerly & Son was sold to Coldwater Seafood. Harold, Sr. passed away that year during the negotiation process. Following the sale Harold, Jr. bought an oyster house across Nanticoke Harbor and started Nanticoke Seafood Company, formerly the frozen division of H. B. Kennerly & Son. He finally retired from the oyster business around 1979. Trott Collection:The bulk of the Trott collection is divided among two categories: advertisements and correspondence relating to the companies that he advertised for while running an ad business in Annapolis in the late 1940s to early 1950s, and articles and internal correspondence for Chesapeake Appreciation, Inc., the group in charge of Chesapeake Appreciation Days (CAD). Trott worked with the CAD in the late 1970s when employed by the state Department of Economic and Community Development. Additional materials in the collection include miscellaneous papers from his stint as an advertising man for The Skipper magazine, papers collected while active with the Annapolis Power Squadron, and one document from his brief career as a yacht broker. Biographical BackgroundMr. Lester R. Trott, (born 1918) was involved throughout his life in several aspects of maritime business and promotion on the Chesapeake Bay. A lifelong resident of Annapolis, Maryland, he is a life charter member of the Annapolis Power Squadron dating back to the early 1940s. Starting in the late 1940s he started his own advertising firm, Lester R. Trott, Advertising, which handled promotion and advertising for local businesses. His principal account was for Chesapeake Vacation Cruise of Annapolis but also included Weems Navigation, Tidewater Cruises [?] (of Ephrata PA), John Trumpy & Sons, and many others, not necessarily maritime. He is also one of the founders of the magazine The Chesapeake Skipper (later The Skipper), the first yachting magazine on the Chesapeake (first issue July 1947). After closing his business he joined the staff, working as production manager from December 1951 to February 1952 and thereafter in advertising sales with Henry T. Meneely until March 1953. Leaving the magazine he started another business, this time as a yacht broker. At the time there was only one other yacht broker in business in Annapolis - Annapolis Yacht Sales. Among the boats he handled distributionship for was the Little Mariner, a small plywood outboard cruiser made by Mariner Cruiser of Maryland. He closed the brokerage and returned to the magazine in November 1956 as advertising manager, remaining there until July 1961. Thereafter, he worked as a director of special events and the special projects manager in the Maryland Department of Economic and Community Development, Division of Tourist Development. One of the projects he helped promote was the Chesapeake Appreciation Days, strongly represented in this collection. He remained in this capacity until retirement in 1980.
